Swarthout, who has a PhD in Latin American Literature, spent the past 10 years teaching Spanish language, culture, and literature at Middlebury College, Colgate University, and currently teaches at Long Trail.
LTS Junior Isabelle Barnard is attending the rigorous language immersion program that combines decades of languages expertise from Middlebury College and Monterey Institute of International Studies.  Placed in the highest level of the program (Level 6), Isabelle has been taking a combined language/literature AP prep course and doing a variety of interesting electives, from folkloric dance to literature.
Students in this program are required to make a commitment to exclusively speak, write, and read their studied language for the entire summer session. Long Trail applauds their year-round commitment to World Languages!

In addition to the awarding of diplomas, several honors were bestowed to students and faculty. Jon Schubert, a rising senior was given the Debby Brown Award, Buddy Kurjiaka was presented the Barb West Award, and The Dave and Rene Wilson Award given by The National Honor Society went to graduate Kodi Ross. Director of Admissions, Courtney Callo was the recipient of the Long Trail Parents Association’s Founder’s Award.

The inspiring commencement address was delivered by Kathleen Colson, Trustee, LTS Alumni parent, Founder and Executive Director of The BOMA FUND and President of African Safari Planners. To read her words of advice to the Class of 2010, click here…

They have also been selected to present their research results at the Great Lakes Research Symposium in Burlington in June. Long Trail is the only secondary school presenting at the symposium, joining the University of Michigan, Cornell University, McGill University, University of Vermont, Middlebury College, US Geological Survey, EPA, and the VT Agency of Natural Resources. Kudos to both teachers and students for this impressive distinction!

Never has that been more apparent than last week. Several different programs were happening simultaneously within the Long Trail community. The 8th grade students were on a 5 day trip to Washington DC where they experienced the very best that our nation’s capital has to offer. Visits to museums, memorials, the White House and a trip to the Capital to meet Senator Leahy were all on the agenda. Middle schoolers in 6th and 7th grades were involved in an intensive project studying water. Students in grades 9-11 participated in Connections, an in-depth look at immigration. Seniors were involved in a variety of internships outside the school. These experiences ranged from crab fishing in Puerto Rico to Harvard University archives and even an internship with reporter Benita Zahn at WNYT. A fun-filled, educational week was had by all.
