CONGRATULATIONS TO…

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

Congratulations to David Spero, Scott Worland and students Noah Lowenthal, Oren Cook, and Asa Kuhn for writing a research paper – “The Composition and Abundance of Bethnic Macroinvertebrates in the Mettowee River: A Study of Water Quality in the Lower Lake Champlain Basin” – that was selected for publication in the Lake Champlain Research Proceedings. They have also been selected to present their research results at the Great Lakes Research Symposium in Burlington in June. Long Trail is the only secondary school presenting at the symposium, joining the University of Michigan, Cornell University, McGill University, University of Vermont, Middlebury College, US Geological Survey, EPA, and the VT Agency of Natural Resources. Kudos to both teachers and students for this impressive distinction!

AT LONG TRAIL SCHOOL, WE BELIEVE THAT DIVERSITY IMPROVES THE EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE.

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

At Long Trail School, we believe that diversity improves the educational experience. Never has that been more apparent than last week. Several different programs were happening simultaneously within the Long Trail community. The 8th grade students were on a 5 day trip to Washington DC where they experienced the very best that our nation’s capital has to offer. Visits to museums, memorials, the White House and a trip to the Capital to meet Senator Leahy were all on the agenda. Middle schoolers in 6th and 7th grades were involved in an intensive project studying water. Students in grades 9-11 participated in Connections, an in-depth look at immigration. Seniors were involved in a variety of internships outside the school. These experiences ranged from crab fishing in Puerto Rico to Harvard University archives and even an internship with reporter Benita Zahn at WNYT. A fun-filled, educational week was had by all.

BLOODDRUMSPIRIT ARTIST RESIDENCY AT LONG TRAIL SCHOOL

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Members of the group BloodDrumSpirit performed for Long Trail School.

March 5, 2010—BloodDrumSpirit spent a jam-packed day with students and staff at Long Trail School on February 25. BloodDrumSpirit is a quartet of jazz and world music musicians (drum, piano, bass and saxophone) who have been performing together since 1981. Dr. Royal Hartigan, the group’s leader, is a tenured professor of world music at University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth and a Fulbright scholar. The quartet has a lot of experience leading workshops in West African drumming, song and dance; Indian time cycles, original rhythmic concepts and practice, African American music, and jazz history and styles. The musicians worked intensively with choral and instrumental students in two 80-minute workshops and performed a show for the entire school. Their residency was funded by the Creative Connections Arts Fund of the Vermont Community Foundation. For more information, contact Melissa Chesnut-Tangerman at Long Trail School at mchesnut-tangerman@longtrailschool.org or 867-5717 x215.
