Prerequisite: Art Exploration or permission from Arts faculty; strongly recommended for grades 9 and 10 as a prerequisite for the IB Visual Arts program.

This course introduces students to periods in art from the Renaissance to the present. Students learn about each era in art through a variety of sources including books, videos, kinesthetic learning, and hands-on studio projects. Students are required to keep an investigative workbook where they learn to analyze, appreciate, and reflect upon art from a variety of time periods and cultures. As art reflects the social, economic, political, and environmental concerns of the time period and society in which it is created, students will be fascinated by the influences and styles that have documented our world through art. Students will come away with the ability to interpret and appreciate art and will have a rich understanding of art’s purpose.
