LTS Profile
LONG TRAIL SCHOOL, founded in 1975, is an independent school located in Dorset, Vermont.
THE COMMUNITY includes students from 39 towns in southwestern Vermont and nearby New York State, as well as seven countries. Educational choice through town tuition vouchers provides both geographic and socio-economic diversity.
STUDENT PROFILE The student centered educational approach attracts students to Long Trail. They seek the challenge, and support, resulting from small classes and individualized teaching.
LTS has a mission to provide an intellectually enriching college-preparatory curriculum in a supportive, caring environment to foster in each student a lifelong commitment to excellence.
- is committed to its founding principles: each student is unique, small group instruction responds to individual needs, high academic standards motivate students, financial need should not deter qualified students from applying.

77% TAKING ONE OR MORE AP COURSES
Students enrolled in AP courses are required to take the AP exam. Out of 22 seniors, 17 are taking a total of 41 AP courses.
SAT SCORES
In 2008, Long Trail scored well above both state and national means. On critical reading, math and writing sections, the middle 50% of Long Trail students ranged 550-640, 480-630, and 510-600, respectively. Their total SAT score, including writing, ranges 1590-1850. See chart below.
NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Class of 2003 – 2 Finalists (11% of the class); Class of 2004 – 2 Finalists, 2 Commended (25% of the class); Class of 2005 – 1 Finalist, 1 Commended (15% of the class); Class of 2006 – 1 Commended (6% of the class); Class of 2007 – 1 Commended (7% of the class); Class of 2008 – 1 Finalist (5% of the class).
ACT SCORES
The middle 50% of Long Trail’s ACT Composite ranged 23-28 in 2008. Their average composite score is well above the national and state means. See chart below.
100% ATTENDING FOUR-YEAR INSTITUTIONS
The classes of 2007and 2008 had 100% of its graduates attend four year colleges. Over the previous five graduating classes, 93% of Long Trail graduates have attended a four year institution.
GPA RANGE AND CLASS RANK
Entering into their senior year, the Class of 2009 has two students (10% of the class) average in the A range; fourteen students (63%) average in the B range; and six students (27% of the class) average in the C range. The GPA includes courses in English, math, science, social studies, world languages, the arts, and technology. AP and advanced classes are not weighted in the GPA calculation. The small size of the Class of 2009 (22 students) nullifies class rank as a meaningful measure of student achievement.
