Teams answered questions like – Adama Barrow, the newly elected president of this West African nation, was forced to take his oath of office in the neighboring country of Senegal because the former authoritarian ruler had refused to step down? and Long recognized as an accounting device, this collection of ropes and knots is now considered to be the basis of an Andean writing system? Team One – Garrett, Ashley, Ben, Charlie, Sophie and Lia were the winning group.

They played a series of sounds to faculty members and students of different age ranges. They will collect more data at home, and one class wants to try to collect data for their dogs!

Photo of the day (October 13): LTS 7th graders are participating in a citizen science study with the Harvard Experimental forest. They are working on a project called “Woolly Bully: Hemlock Trees and the Invasive Pest, the Woolly Adelgid”. The kids have to measure new growth on Hemlock trees in the fall, and in the spring they look for the presence of woolly adelgid, an invasive species decimating hemlock populations. The data they collect is used by the Harvard E. F. to monitor the spread of woolly adegid and monitor the health of trees as it spreads.

Photo of the day (October 5): October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and NHS is raising money for breast cancer research by selling pink ribbons. We annually have a fun little competition between the grades to see who buys the most pink ribbons. 12th grade is currently in the lead.

There are some old favorites like biking with Courtney, Mythology of Star Wars with Deb and Model UN as well as some interesting new ones like touch rugby and the philosophy and politics of feminism. This group of bikers spent the class period assembling the bikes that Long Trail won from Schwinn for participating in Bike to School Day back in May.
