College Process for International Students

If LTS International Students wish to continue their education in the United States, then students must follow the guidelines set forth by the College Counselor.  Students are expected to show motivation and take responsibility for initiating and completing the college application process.  This is time consuming and sometimes arduous for International Students on account of their unfamiliarity with college forms and the process.  International Students are required to read and agree to the following protocol to ensure their greatest success with this challenging process.

  • Students start the college process in their junior year.
  • Homestay families may choose to help their student with the college process, but it is not an expectation.
  • Students should meet with college representatives visiting LTS and attend college fairs arranged through the College Counselor’s office.
  • The LTS College Counselor will help the international student compile a list of colleges and universities that is commensurate with the student’s academic performance, interests, and test scores.
  • International parents are encouraged to visit colleges and universities with their son/daughter.
  • A consultant may be hired by the international parents to take their son/daughter on college tours in the Northeast.  While LTS will help to arrange this service, the availability of a consultant cannot be guaranteed.
  • Students need to take all applicable tests (SAT, ACT, TOEFL).  Fees and transportation costs are paid for by the international student.
  • If students wants to re-take the TOEFL before submitting their applications, they are strongly encouraged to do so in their home countries during the summer of their senior year.  Because of the logistics and limited availability of TOEFL openings, we cannot guarantee students will be able to take the test in the fall of their senior year.
  • International Students take the College Seminar activity during the first semester of their senior year to help with the completion of their college applications.
  • The College Counselor and International Coordinator will be available during specified times after school to help with the completion of college applications.
  • If students require more support than provided through LTS, international parents are encouraged to hire a private tutor.
  • International parents will send transcripts and financial statements as requested.
  • International parents are responsible for all application, transcript, and test score fees.
