Extracurricular Clubs and Activities

We offer a number of extracurricular clubs and activities, and encourage students to start new groups as interest arises. The following is a sampling of our existing activities:

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY
The LTS branch of the National Honor Society (NHS) consists of inducted members in grades 10-12 who maintain a B average or better in all classes and have been at LTS for at least one full year. A faculty committee chooses members who exhibit scholarship, leadership, service, character, positive attitude, responsibility, and respect for others. The NHS participates in a number of direct service and fundraising initiatives outside the school as well as shaping our internal culture through various activities.

STUDENT COUNCIL
Middle School and Upper School Student Council members take an active role in helping shape policy at Long Trail, as well as helping to organize and plan various social and fundraising events throughout the year. The purpose of this group is to provide the bridge between the student population, the faculty, staff, and the administration of the school while working to ensure any policies put in place are based on the needs of the student body.

EVENT PLANNING COMMITTEE
This particular group is new to LTS in 2011-12 and will serve as the “social” arm of Student Council. One elected member of the Student Council will be a year-long representative on the EPC, which will organize, plan and sponsor the social events throughout the academic year, such as the Blizzard Ball, Cabin Fever Week and the Funfest Day on the last day of school.  Students will volunteer to serve on this committee for each individual event, so that a wide variety of ideas and perspectives may be brought to each event.  Students may volunteer to help on more than one event throughout the year.

STUDENT AMBASSADORS
The Student Ambassadors help the Admissions Office promote the school to prospective students by coordinating socials and other events throughout the year. They also organize applicant visits and LTS hosts and facilitate the orientation of new students into the school community.

LEO CLUB
The Leo Club is a national service organization whose goal is to engage students in service and leadership within our local communities.  A youth branch of the Lion’s Club, the Long Trail Leo Club undertakes numerous service projects throughout the year, from collecting used eyeglass frames for those who can’t afford them to raising money for local animal shelters. Leos fundraise and make contributions locally, regionally, and internationally each year.

SCHOOL STORE
Upper School students learn business skills through running the School Store during breaks and lunch. Students help set menus and prices, take inventory, schedule shifts, and learn customer service skills.

YEARBOOK COMMITTEE
The Trail is Long Trail’s yearbook, written, edited, funded, and designed by upper school students supervised by a faculty advisor. Students enroll in Yearbook for course credit.

MODEL UN
Long Trail’s Model UN has traveled to Montreal and Ithaca, NY to participate in conferences drawing up to 1,000 high schools. At the Cornell Model U.N. Conference, Long Trail received the Secretary General’s Award in recognition of the Best Small School Delegation.

ENVIRONMENTAL CLUB
The environmental club is open to all students who care about promoting green initiatives, learning about our environment, and thinking of creative ways that our school and the individuals in it can improve and preserve our local and global environment.
