Students learn the fundamentals of guitar playing, or to advance existing skills in a collaborative musical environment. Exercises and repertoire are created or selected by the teacher based on the interests and abilities of the students. Students practice tuning, open chords, barre chords, pentatonic scales, strumming patterns, fingerpicking and flat picking. Advanced players can learn chord theory and traditional notation. The school provides several acoustic and electric guitars to share among the class, and students are encouraged to use their own instruments when possible. Bass, drums, and keyboards are also included based on enrollment. The class typically performs in the winter and spring concerts.
