Expanding Horizons: Long Trail Students Explore New Possibilities Through Tufts Pre-College Programs

At Long Trail School, we teach students how to think, not what to think. We believe that learning extends far beyond the classroom and that students thrive when they are encouraged to ask questions, explore new ideas, and pursue their passions. Through our exciting partnership with Tufts University, students have the opportunity to challenge themselves academically, experience college life, and discover new possibilities at one of the nation’s leading universities. Their experiences reflect Long Trail’s commitment to Openness by encouraging students to embrace new ideas, perspectives, and opportunities that broaden their understanding of themselves and the world around them.

Located just outside of Boston, Tufts University is a globally recognized institution that welcomes nearly 7,000 undergraduate students each year. Its renowned Pre-College Programs offer immersive one- and two-week residential experiences designed to introduce high school students to a wide range of academic disciplines and career pathways. Thanks to the generosity of the E.E. Ford Foundation, Long Trail School has dedicated seats in these enriching summer programs, making this transformative experience available to our students.

This summer marked the third consecutive year that Long Trail has sent a cohort of students to Tufts. Five students, each pursuing an area of personal interest, spent time living on campus, learning from Tufts faculty, collaborating with peers from across the country, and experiencing college life firsthand.

This year’s participants included:

  • Rayne J.Engineering Investigations
  • Logan L.Climate Resilience Institute
  • Tommy W.Engineering Investigations
  • Sage C-B.Entrepreneurship and Innovation Bootcamp
  • Nate W.Mini Med School

Throughout their programs, students gained hands-on experience, developed new skills, and explored potential college majors and career paths. Beyond the classroom, they built confidence, embraced greater independence, and formed meaningful connections with students who share their interests and ambitions.

For Sage C-B., the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Bootcamp provided an opportunity to explore creative problem-solving and develop an excitement for her future.

My Tufts experience has been incredible. I have made so many new friends and gained so many memorable experiences. Being at Tufts has let me know so much more about how life will be after high school and I feel like I am ready for college.

Experiences like the Tufts Pre-College Program reflect Long Trail School’s commitment to preparing students for success beyond graduation by fostering curiosity, independence, and lifelong learning. These opportunities encourage students to expand their horizons, deepen their academic interests, and discover new possibilities beyond the Long Trail campus.

Looking Ahead

Students entering grades 9-12 who are interested in participating in next summer’s Tufts Pre-College Programs are encouraged to begin preparing their applications this fall. Applications for the 2027 programs will open in November.

Financial considerations should not discourage interested students from applying. Funding for this opportunity is made possible through a partnership among Long Trail School, Tufts University, and participating families, helping ensure this exceptional experience is accessible to qualified students. Families with questions are encouraged to contact Scott McGrath, Director of College Counseling and Career Coaching, to learn more about the application process and available funding opportunities.

We are proud of this year’s Tufts cohort for embracing the opportunity to learn, grow, and challenge themselves. We look forward to continuing this valued partnership and seeing even more Long Trail students expand their horizons through the Tufts Pre-College Program in the years ahead.
