College & Career Counseling Courses

Beginning with PSAT and career programming in the 10th grade, through personalized college meetings in the 11th grade, we guide students in discovering their academic passions and career interests. Our comprehensive approach includes leading edge technology, college nights, workshops, and trips to national and regional college fairs, facilitating a smooth transition from exploration to application. In their senior year, we continue to support students through the application, financial aid, and scholarship processes, ensuring that the entire experience is enriching and empowering for our students and their families.

Sophomore Year

In the fourth quarter, tenth grade students will start to discover their own strengths, aptitudes, and interests using a variety of cutting edge inventories. Students will then explore various careers and the pathways necessary to enter those fields. They will create a resume and work on life skills such as interviewing.

Junior Year

This year-long class will help students develop a plan for life after Long Trail. Students will incorporate the results from their career explorations to find the right colleges, universities, or gap year programs. Students will meet with visiting college representatives and attend a college fair. There will be in-depth discussions of the college admissions and financial aid processes. Additionally, preparation for the PSAT (fall) and ACT/SAT (spring) will be provided. The ultimate goal is to have students fully prepared to apply to post-LTS programs when they return for their senior year.

Senior Year

In the first semester, seniors will have the time, opportunity, and support to work on their post-upper school plans including gap years, college lists, college visits, and applications, essays, and portfolios. Students will be able to meet with visiting colleges during the fall. ACT, SAT and TOEFL test preparation is covered and a testing plan, if needed, will be established. Students meet as a class, but much of the work will be tailored to the individual student and their needs. Students will typically submit a first round of applications during the class.
